From CNA to RN: Mapping a Career Path in Long-Term Care

May 30, 2026 7 min read

Long-term care is one of the best environments to grow a nursing career. Here's a realistic roadmap from certified aide to registered nurse.

Start strong as a CNA

Your CNA years are where you build the clinical instincts that no classroom teaches — reading a resident's baseline, spotting subtle changes, and mastering compassionate hands-on care. Treat every shift as clinical experience that compounds.

Bridge to LPN

Some CNAs pursue an LPN credential while continuing to work. Program length, eligibility, costs, clinical requirements, and work scheduling vary; confirm them with the school, employer, and applicable licensing authority.

Advance to RN

From LPN, an LPN-to-RN bridge program (ADN or BSN) opens the door to charge nurse and clinical leadership roles. Your long-term care experience makes you especially valuable in skilled nursing and post-acute settings.

Keep your credentials current

Track role-specific renewals and documents using authoritative licensing sources and the requirements communicated for each opportunity. Applicants remain responsible for maintaining their own qualifications.

Use flexibility to fund the journey

Compare each available opportunity with your school schedule, travel needs, and financial plan. Rates, schedules, and assignment availability vary and should be reviewed before accepting work.
