What to Look for When Choosing a Nurse Staffing Agency

Apr 8, 2026 8 min read

Not all staffing partners are equal. Ten questions every administrator should ask before signing with an agency.

How do they vet their staff?

Ask which role, assignment, facility, and regulatory requirements the agency coordinates, how current documents are reviewed, and which responsibilities remain with the facility.

Are they local?

Ask about the agency's verified service area, request channels, escalation contacts, and how it communicates request status. Do not assume geography guarantees response or coverage.

Can they substantiate performance claims?

If an agency presents fill rates, response times, client counts, or other performance measures, ask for the reporting period, denominator, exclusions, and verification method. Treat unsupported marketing figures cautiously.

How do they handle billing?

Transparent, itemized rates with no hidden placement fees protect your budget and your trust. Get pricing in writing before you commit.

Do they prioritize continuity?

Ask how the agency records facility preferences and communicates repeat-assignment requests. Continuity remains subject to professional availability and assignment requirements.
