Before a First Shift at an Unfamiliar Facility

Prepare the arrival and reporting details that let your first conversation at a new facility start clearly.

Confirm the assignment itself

Review the confirmed role, facility, date and full start-to-end time. Compare that information with your calendar and any later messages. If two versions conflict, resolve the difference through the operational contact before leaving. A first shift is a poor time to discover that you were following an older instruction.

Plan where to arrive

Check the address, parking, entrance and place to report. Ask whether the entrance differs by time of day. Keep directions available for the trip, but do not place access codes or other sensitive instructions in public notes. Know the appropriate contact if an arrival question remains unresolved.

Ask what preparation is expected

Clarify what you need to bring and which requirements must be completed through the approved process. Use assignment-specific instructions instead of packing every document you possess. Do not send credential files or health information through Med Plus public forms to compensate for uncertainty about preparation.

Identify orientation and access contacts

Ask who will explain facility routines and help with required system access. Confirm how to raise a missing-access problem. Experience elsewhere does not establish that the same charting, handoff or reporting process applies here. Follow the facility's instructions before using its systems or taking on unfamiliar responsibilities.

Make questions easy to find

Prepare a short checklist of logistical questions: reporting contact, break arrangements, timekeeping process and who handles schedule changes. Keep it free of patient information. Use it to guide appropriate conversations, not as a substitute for facility orientation or a personal record of resident care.

Close the loop afterward

At the end of the shift, follow the facility's handoff and time-record process and identify any unresolved operational issue for the proper contact. Update your personal availability if necessary. Do not assume that completing one shift automatically confirms another date or changes the terms of future assignments.
