Questions to Confirm Before a Night Assignment

Confirm the practical details that can be easy to miss when a shift begins after daytime offices close.

Write both calendar dates

For an overnight assignment, record the date and time of arrival and the date and time the shift ends. Check that those match the confirmation. A shorthand such as “Tuesday night” can leave uncertainty around midnight, particularly when discussing availability or comparing more than one possible assignment.

Confirm the correct entrance

Ask which entrance to use at that hour, how parking works and where to report after entering. Daytime reception instructions may not describe the overnight process. Keep the current arrival instructions accessible without including patient information or private access details in public messages or shared calendar invitations.

Identify the on-duty contact

Obtain the role or contact point for the person expecting you and ask how to reach the appropriate facility contact if arrival instructions do not work. Also confirm the staffing contact for assignment questions. Knowing which issue goes to which person avoids relying on an unanswered daytime number.

Ask about first-shift orientation

Clarify what orientation, access or facility-specific preparation is needed before you begin the assigned work. Ask who will provide it and when. Do not assume a quieter building means you should proceed without instructions, or that experience at another facility replaces the receiving facility's requirements.

Plan your complete availability window

Review the journey, planned arrival and next-day commitments alongside the shift itself. Include overnight end dates in your availability update. If a proposed schedule does not fit, explain the actual limit rather than saying you are generally available for nights and hoping the details will work out.

Recheck changes before departure

Use the agreed channel to confirm any changed date, time, unit or reporting instructions. Keep one current version of the assignment details. Med Plus offers 24/7 support, but that does not mean every requested shift is available or confirmed; treat assignment acceptance as a separate, explicit step.
